“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitude of mind.”- William James
Do you remember when your parents used to tell you that you needed an “attitude adjustment?” Most of us were teenagers at the time, and our typical response was to roll our eyes and carry on doing whatever we were doing, that is until we were grounded. Then, most of us would attempt to make that adjustment, if only to escape punishment.
This typical scene from a teenager’s life helps to illustrate how changing your attitude can change your life. The teen who changes his or her bad attitude, generally avoids tension with his or her parents and avoids being sent to his or her room or something similar.
As adults, there aren’t many people who are going to tell you when you need an “attitude adjustment” even if you do. One part of being an adult means that you recognize when a bad or negative attitude has started to negatively affect your life, and another part of being an adult is that you take steps to change your attitude when it starts to negatively affect your life.
Just like the teenager who can alter his or her life by altering his or her attitude, so can you. If you have a negative attitude, then you might find that you don’t have fulfilling relationships, that you don’t perform well at work, and that you aren’t happy in general. No one likes someone who constantly has a bad attitude, and someone with a bad attitude might have problems with a romantic relationship and might find that his or her friends aren’t as friendly as they used to be. A boss is also much less likely to promote people with bad attitudes. Those who are more positive are the ones who are likely to get more raises and promotions.
So if you find that you are negative more often than not, maybe you should take some time off work, take a vacation, or just take some time for yourself. Think about the things that are making you negative or unhappy and think about what you can do to change them. Talking with friends, family and occasionally a professional can sometimes help.
However, once you’ve changed a bad attitude to a better one, you will see remarkable change in your life. For example, your relationships and your work life will likely be healthier and happier. You will find that you are more productive because you will be more positive about tackling and completing projects.
So what attitude changes can you make today that will help you change your life for the better?
